Reporting an Absence Through Skyward
Good attendance is important for many reasons. Your child receives the maximum benefit of education by being in school every day. As a parent/guardian, you are in the best position to help your children understand the benefits of regular attendance.
You can help in the following ways:
- Tell your children it is important to get to school every day and on time so they can learn more.
- If your child makes excuses to stay home from school, take the time to listen to their concerns.
- Post the school calendar, and plan your vacations and appointments outside of school time.
- Monitor your child's attendance through Klein ISD's Family Access (Skyward).
- Report absences in a timely manner using Skyward Family Access.
Early Dismissal
This year parents can submit Early Dismissal through the Skyward Family Access parent portal. Instructions for doing so can be found here.
Attendance Policy and Procedures/Excused Absences
Any student who is absent for whole or part of the day, it is mandatory that parents enter the absence through Skyward, within the 5 days. By using your Skyward Family Access account. Instructions for doing so can be found here.
The following Notes should be given to your child’s attendance clerk within the 5 days of their absence(s)
• Medical note
• Court note
• Official note for observance of approved religious holy days
• Verification of College Visit
Please note: KISD allows “College Visit Days” for Junior and Senior level students only. Students are allowed 2 college days per year of their junior and senior year. The student must return with an official letterhead document from the college visited. Pamphlets, business cards, etc… are not sufficient.
If a student does not produce one of the items listed above within the allotted time frame, that absence will be considered unexcused.
If the attendance office does not receive written documentation from the parent/guardian within 5 school days of your child's absence, the absence will remain unexcused (refer to the Student Handbook). After 5 school days, the absence cannot be changed to excused.
Unexcused Absences
Both the parent and the student are accountable for unexcused absences in the state of Texas. To help parents stay informed, the school will notify the parent if their child accrues absences. A compulsory notification will be sent to a parent if their child has the following:
- 1st Warning Letter: 3 absences per course in a 4-week period
- 2nd Warning Letter: 6 absences per course in a 4-week period
- Truancy Warning Letter: 3 unexcused absences in a 4-week period
- Denial of Credit: After the 9th absence
Parent Link Information
The Parent Link Automated Calling System will be in effect starting on the third day of the school year and will continue throughout the school year. The system is programmed to initiate a phone call/email to the parent/guardian's PRIMARY contact on file for any student that is absent without a parent or physician's note during the school day. Calls will begin generating about 4:00 p.m. ***If you feel your student was incorrectly marked absent in a class please have your student contact the teacher. The teacher will submit to the attendance office any necessary corrections.
REMINDER: Parent Link calls are initiated to the primary call number and serve as a communication tool from the school to the parent/guardian. This Parent Link call does not excuse the absence or change the coding to an excused absence. The parent/guardian must contact the Attendance Office within 5 (five) school days either by Skyward or written note to excuse the absence. After 5 (five) school days, the absence cannot be excused and the coding cannot be changed, per the Klein ISD High School Handbook.
